Capturing Oxford Through My Lens

Hello, I'm Jonny

I've spent the last 14 years with a camera in my hands, and Oxford has become one of my favorite places to film. There's something magical about the way light bounces off those honey-colored college walls or how the mist rises from the river on early autumn mornings.

My journey with cameras has taken me to some pretty cool places – creating Christmas ads for Sky TV, grabbing behind-the-scenes moments with Shia LaBeouf during "Salvable," working with talented folks like Maimuna Enya Memon and Nina Wadia, and even filming with Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford. I've also created content for Marriott Hotels, helping them showcase what makes their guest experiences special.

But honestly? I get just as excited filming a local shop owner on the High Street talking about their craft beer selection or capturing a couple's first dance beneath the vaulted ceiling of an Oxford college. Every story has its own magic if you look for it.

When I'm not peering through viewfinders, you'll probably find me walking my golden retriever Jess around Christ Church Meadow or Port Meadow. She's become quite the expert at waiting patiently while I stop to check out interesting angles or light – the true unsung hero of my photography business!

What We Could Create Together in Oxford

Oxford gives us such amazing possibilities to work with – from those dreaming spires to cutting-edge research labs. Here's what we might make together:

Business Stories With Heart: Whether you run a tiny bookshop tucked away on a side street or head up research at Oxford Science Park, I'll help create videos that feel genuinely you – not some corporate template. People connect with authenticity, and that's what drives real engagement (and ultimately, business). The data backs this up – businesses using professional video grow faster than those relying on static content – but what matters most is creating something that actually feels like you.

Weddings & Celebrations: Getting married in Oxford is pretty special – whether it's at one of the historic colleges, the Bodleian, Ashmolean, or botanical gardens. What I love is finding the balance between those grand, historic backdrops and the small, intimate moments that are uniquely yours. Almost every couple tells me afterward that their video captured emotions and moments they didn't even remember experiencing on the day – probably because weddings are beautiful but overwhelming whirlwinds!

Academic Events That Don't Feel Boring: Oxford hosts world-class conferences and academic gatherings, but too often the documentation is... well, dry. I've developed a knack for capturing these events in a way that preserves the intellectual substance while also highlighting the human connections and "aha moments" that make them worthwhile.

Making It All Come Together: Even the best footage needs thoughtful editing. I handle all post-production myself rather than outsourcing it, ensuring your final video delivers exactly what we envisioned together.

The Tech Stuff (If You're Interested)

I've invested in professional gear that delivers exceptional results without turning your event into a film set:

  • Canon C300 Mark III & C70 cameras (the same ones Netflix productions use)

  • Canon R5 for photos and additional angles

  • Smooth-moving gimbal systems for those flowing shots

  • A collection of lenses from wide-angle to close-up

  • Professional lighting that flatters without blinding everyone

  • Proper audio equipment because sound matters just as much as images

But here's the thing – while good equipment matters, knowing when to step back and let a moment unfold naturally matters more. Sometimes the best shot comes when people forget the camera is even there.

Why People Seem to Enjoy Working With Me

Having spent many days (and early mornings, and late evenings) filming throughout Oxford, I've gotten to know this city's rhythm and light. I know which college gardens burst with color in May, how the light streams through Radcliffe Camera at different times of year, and where to find quieter spots when the tourist crowds swell.

My work with brands like Marriott has taught me how to deliver polished results that meet high expectations – whether for a global company or a local independent business.

But what clients mention most often isn't my technical knowledge – it's that I make them feel comfortable. Let's face it, most people don't love being on camera. I focus on creating a relaxed experience where you can be yourself, which leads to footage that actually feels like you – not some awkward, stiff version of you trying to "perform" for a video.

A Couple of Recent Oxford Projects

Last month, I worked with a tech startup founded by Oxford graduates. Instead of the standard "talking heads in an office" approach, we created a series of short films that connected their innovation to Oxford's centuries-old tradition of world-changing ideas. We filmed them discussing their work while punting on the river, walking through the college where they first met, and in their lab where the magic happens now. The resulting videos have helped them tell a much richer story to investors.

I also recently filmed a wedding that moved from a ceremony at University Church to a reception at one of the colleges. My favorite moment wasn't the couple's first dance (though that was lovely), but the spontaneous speech given by the bride's grandfather, returning to his alma mater after 60 years. He hadn't planned to speak, but being back in a place that shaped his life so profoundly moved him to share stories that had everyone alternating between laughter and tears. Capturing unexpected moments like that is what makes this job special.

Let's Chat About Your Project

After all my time filming in Oxford, I still find myself stopping in my tracks sometimes, camera halfway to my eye, just taking in a view or a moment. There's something about this city that never gets old – maybe it's how it balances tradition and innovation, or how every cobblestone seems to have a story.

If you're looking for someone to help tell your Oxford story – whether it's your wedding day, your business journey, or an event you're hosting – I'd love to hear what you have in mind. No industry jargon or complicated packages – just an honest conversation about creating something meaningful.

Give me a call at 07852 252034 or drop me an email at contactjonnyn@gmail.com. Better yet, let's grab a coffee at Handlebar or The Missing Bean and chat in person. Oxford's too beautiful a city to just talk about over email!

When I'm Around

I'm generally available seven days a week from 9:30am to 6:30pm, but filming often happens outside those hours – sometimes the best light in Oxford is at 5am or 9pm, and I go where the good light leads! Just let me know what you're thinking, and we'll make it work.

A Note from the Author

Every time I'm filming in Oxford, I still get that little spark of excitement when the light hits the colleges just right or when I capture a moment that tells a real story. Even after 14 years with a camera in hand, working with everyone from big names like Marriott Hotels to local Oxford businesses, it's the human connections that make this job special.

I've got the technical bits covered with my DMI qualification and professional gear, but what really matters is creating something that feels authentically you. If that sounds like what you're after, I'd love to grab a coffee at The Missing Bean and chat about your ideas.
