Let's chatAbout Me – Jonny Noakes, Sheffield Filmmaker
Hey there! I'm Jonny, and I've been shooting videos around Sheffield and beyond for a good 14 years now. It all kicked off when I nicked my dad's old camcorder as a teenager – couldn't put the damn thing down! Now I've turned that obsession into my livelihood.
After uni, I cut my teeth on some indie documentaries. God, those were tough but brilliant days – sleeping on floors, eating beans on toast, and learning how to make magic with barely any budget. Eventually, I scrapped together enough cash and courage to go solo with my own videography business.
One of my most memorable projects was working on the behind-the-scenes team for Salvable, a short film starring Shia LaBeouf. I've also been lucky enough to create content for Sky TV and direct shoots with brilliant talents like Maimuna Enya Memon and Nina Wadia.
Over the years, I've developed a bit of a signature look – kind of cinematic but real, you know? I hate those super staged corporate videos that make you cringe. Whether I'm filming the CEO of some big Sheffield company or a bride walking down the aisle, I'm always hunting for those genuine moments when people forget I'm even there.
Tech-wise, I'm a proper geek (my girlfriend rolls her eyes whenever I start talking about camera specs). I've got all the toys – decent cameras, drones, fancy lighting – but honestly, knowing when NOT to use all that stuff is probably what sets my work apart.
Those weird pandemic years actually helped my business take off. Companies suddenly needed videos but couldn't have film crews flying in from London. Being local paid off, and I've been flat out ever since.
When I'm not lugging cameras around, you'll find me in the Peak District with Jess, my daft golden retriever who thinks every stick is worth retrieving (she lives up to her breed's name, bless her). I'm also pretty obsessed with rock climbing – there's something about dangling off a cliff that makes wedding deadlines seem less scary! I've been volunteering with a youth film club in Sheffield too. Seeing kids get excited about filmmaking takes me right back to those days with my dad's camcorder.
Look, I'm not one for fancy mission statements, but here's my deal: I want to make videos that don't just show what happened, but actually make you feel something. Whether it's your wedding, your product launch, or your company story – if it matters to you, it matters to me. And I promise I won't make you stand awkwardly and say "cheese" – nobody wants that!
Looking for someone to capture your special day or business event in Sheffield? Whether it's your wedding day, product launch, or company profile - I'll make sure your video doesn't just show what happened, but makes people feel something when they watch it.
Why Pick Me for Your Sheffield Video Project?
I've been shooting all over Yorkshire for years now, and I've gotten to know Sheffield inside and out. Every city has its own vibe, and Sheffield's got that perfect mix of gritty industrial heritage and stunning natural scenery that makes for killer backdrops.
What makes my work different? I don't do cookie-cutter videos that could be filmed anywhere by anyone. Each project gets its own treatment - I spend time getting to know you and what you're after before I even pick up a camera. Plus, I'm a bit obsessed with getting things just right (my girlfriend calls it being picky, I call it professional!).
My Camera Gear (for the tech geeks out there)
I've invested in some pretty sweet kit over the years - not because I'm flashy, but because good tools make a massive difference:
Sony FX3 for most shoots - absolute beast in low light (perfect for those dimly lit wedding venues!)
That chunky Ronin gimbal that makes my arms ache but keeps everything buttery smooth
A Canon lens that cost more than my first car but gives that dreamy cinematic look
Drone for when we want to get fancy with aerial shots (weather permitting - Sheffield's not exactly known for its clear skies!)
Proper lighting setup because bad lighting ruins everything
Decent mics because sound matters as much as picture (maybe more)
All the Adobe stuff for editing
Backup everything because tech fails at the worst possible moments (learned that the hard way at a wedding once - never again!)
What I Do
Business Videos
Brand stories that don't put viewers to sleep
Product demos that actually make people want to buy your stuff
Event coverage that captures the energy, not just people standing around
Training videos that employees might actually watch
Social media clips that don't scream "corporate"
Company culture pieces that show the real humans behind your business
Virtual tours without the cheesy estate agent vibe
Customer testimonials where people sound genuine, not scripted
Personal Stuff
Weddings filmed like mini-movies (without the Hollywood price tag)
Birthday bashes - from kids' parties to 90th celebrations
Anniversary do's with all the emotional moments
Graduation ceremonies (I'll catch the moment when your mum bursts into tears)
Family get-togethers worth rewatching for years
Cultural events and performances
Engagements and proposals (I'm good at hiding behind bushes with a camera)
Music videos for local bands (I used to be in one - we were terrible!)
Best Spots in Sheffield for Filming
Sheffield's got some proper gems for filming. Here are my favorites (and trust me, I've shot at all of them):
Winter Garden - Great for those plant-background interviews. Just watch out for the echo!
Botanical Gardens - Perfect for romantic stuff. Especially nice in spring when everything's blooming.
Peace Gardens - Those fountains look ace on camera, but be prepared to dodge tourists
Sheffield Cathedral - Stunning place, but they've got strict rules about where you can film
Kelham Island - Industrial vibes for days. Great for edgy brand videos.
Peak District - Just a short drive away and absolutely stunning (though the weather changes every 5 minutes)
Town Hall - Impressive old building, but you need permits for commercial filming
Millennium Gallery - Modern spaces with good lighting (a videographer's dream!)
Endcliffe Park - Lovely natural setting, popular for family shoots
Why Video Works for Business
All the boring stats say video marketing works better than text - something like 27 times better engagement than regular ads. But here's the real deal: people are lazy readers but they'll watch a video. Plus, they remember what they see in videos way more than what they read. If you want people to remember your business, get it on video - simple as that.
What My Clients Say
"Jonny filmed our website content back in March. Such a laugh! He's super professional but doesn't make you feel awkward in front of the camera. Got our photos back quickly and the video was spot on. Will definitely be using him again!"
— Will (who now sends me Christmas cards)
"If you're getting married, BOOK THIS MAN. Jonny did our wedding in July and I can't stop watching the video. Somehow he caught every important moment without ever being in the way. My mother-in-law (who complained about "wasting money" on a videographer) now watches it weekly and cries every time."
— Joe & Emma
"Where do I even start?! Jonny was AMAZING before, during and after our wedding. So chilled but professional. He caught all these little moments we'd have missed otherwise. The video makes me sob every time (in a good way!). Our dog also fell in love with him, which says everything about his character!"
— Sophie & Tom (and Basil the dog)
FAQs (the stuff people always ask)
How far ahead should I book you? For normal shoots, about a month is good. For weddings, the earlier the better - I'm usually booked up 9-12 months ahead for summer Saturdays.
What do you charge? Depends entirely on what you need. A half-day corporate shoot starts around £500, full wedding packages from £1,200. Drop me a message and I'll give you a proper quote - no pressure, promise.
Can I have all the raw footage? Yep! Unlike some videographers who hoard footage like dragons, I'm happy to hand over the raw files. Just let me know beforehand so I can make sure everything's organized properly.
How long until I get my video? Work stuff usually takes 2-3 weeks. Weddings take 4-6 weeks (there's tons of footage to sort through). If you need something urgently, I can usually sort a rush job for a bit extra.
Are you insured? Yes! Fully insured for equipment, public liability, and professional indemnity. I've had cameras stolen and hard drives die - you live and learn!
